Twenty Thanksgivings ago, a few dozen runners lined up in the cold before the turkey went in. This year, the Lake Norman Turkey Trot turns 20.
Here’s the thing about a Thanksgiving race. Nobody runs it for a time. They run it because Grandma is walking the 5K, because cousins are in town, and because pie tastes better when you earned it.
The Lake Norman Turkey Trot has been that race for Cornelius since 2007. On Thursday, November 26, 2026, we run the 20th edition. There’s a half marathon, a 10K, and a 5K. Every one of them starts and ends at Life Fellowship Church on Chartown Drive.
It’s also the only half marathon within 150 miles of Charlotte on Thanksgiving morning. And heads up: prices go up September 1.
Let’s break it all down. What makes this race different, how to get ready in the 13 weeks you have left, and why you should register this week instead of next month.

What Makes the Lake Norman Turkey Trot Different
Most turkey trots are a 5K and a hot chocolate table. Ours has that too. But it also has something no other race in the region offers.
It’s the only half marathon within 150 miles of Charlotte on Thanksgiving Day. If you want 13.1 miles before dinner, this is the place. Period.
The course is all asphalt. No trails, no mud, no surprise roots. The half marathon runs two loops through Cornelius neighborhoods with an out-and-back on the McDowell Creek Greenway. It climbs about 721 feet over the full distance. That’s rolling, not brutal. Your legs will notice it. Your lungs will be fine.
The 10K and 5K use the same roads with fewer hills. First-timers love the 5K. Families often split up. One parent runs the half, the other walks the 5K with the kids, and everyone meets at the arch.
A quick definition for anyone new to this: a turkey trot is a road race held on or near Thanksgiving Day. They’re the most popular race day in America. Running USA has reported well over a million finishers on Thanksgiving in recent years, more than any other single day on the calendar.

There’s also a virtual option. Run any distance, anywhere, on your own clock. It’s perfect if you’re traveling but still want the medal and the bragging rights.
It’s a Food Drive, Too
Since the early years, this race has doubled as a food drive. We ask every athlete to bring one non-perishable food item to the start. That’s it. One can.
Those donations, plus a share of race proceeds, support the Human Health Project. They fund grants and food help for local shelters. In 2024, 32 athletes added a cash gift on top of their food item. Hundreds more dropped a can in the bin.
Twenty years of cans adds up. That’s a lot of families fed by people who just wanted to go for a run.

How to Train for a Turkey Trot in 13 Weeks
Good news. From today to race day is exactly 13 weeks. That’s the classic length of a half marathon plan. It’s more than enough for a 10K or 5K.
Here’s the simple version. Pick your distance and follow the matching line.
- Weeks 1–4: Build the habit. Run three days a week. Keep it easy. You should be able to talk. Half marathoners, make one run your “long run” and start at 4 miles. 5K folks, start with 20 minutes of run-walk.
- Weeks 5–8: Add distance. Grow the long run by about a mile each week. Half marathoners hit 8 miles by week 8. 10K runners reach 5 miles. 5K runners can jog 3 miles without stopping.
- Weeks 9–11: Add hills. The course climbs 721 feet. Find a hill and run up it 4 to 6 times once a week. Half marathoners peak at 10 to 11 miles in week 11.
- Weeks 12–13: Back off. Cut your miles by a third. Sleep more. Eat normal. Your body gets faster while you rest.
The one rule that matters most: never increase your weekly miles by more than about 10 percent. That number comes from decades of sports medicine research on running injuries. Go slow now so you can go long later.

Why Families Keep Coming Back
We get a lot of race feedback. The Turkey Trot notes are different. People don’t write about their splits. They write about who they ran with.
One runner told us, “3 generations of our family, ages 7 to 63, ran/walked the 5K.” Another said the 2024 race was “the best one in the 18-year history.” A third wrote that she “loved seeing all the families running together.”
That’s the whole point. A turkey trot is the one race where the slowest person in your group is the most important one. Walk with them. Cross the line together. Then go eat.
And yes, costumes are welcome. Turkey hats. Pilgrim buckles. Full bird suits. We’ve seen it all and we hand out prizes for the best ones.
One more reason people come back: the math. A half marathon burns around 1,300 calories for a 150-pound runner. That’s roughly the turkey, the stuffing, and one slice of pie. We’re not saying run for the pie. We’re saying you could.
The Turkey Trot is also the third race in the Lake Norman Half Marathon Series. If you’re chasing series points, this one counts. If you’ve never heard of the series, the Trot is a great place to start.
