Lake Norman Half Marathon Wildman & 5K race Update

Post race update

Lake Norman Half Marathon Wildman & 5K was held in Mooresville on April 1, 2023 - on one of the most intense morning we’ve seen in 20+ years of hosting races! There was a MASSIVE storm front moving in and wind from left over tornadoes in states south of us.

The team was AWESOME! When we arrived at 5:30am it was pitch black, the wind was howling, the course signage from the day before had been blown away but the silver lining was the rain had not come yet. Which meant the arrows painted in chalk were still there.

As race staff our number one focus is athlete safety - we had one eye on the Weather.com app watching the radar, another eye on our equipment flying off in the wind and another eye on answering athletes questions! We finally made the decision to abandon any equipment the wind could steal and instead focus on making sure the runners could follow the course.

By the far the most important weather condition we were looking to avoid was lightning. Luckily we didn't get any.

Finally at 7:45am the half marathoners took off in dry but super windy conditions and we moved the 5K start to 7:50am (from 8am).

The race was on - finally!

And we were very curious what the athletes would think of the course. To say it was BRUTAL is an understatement. The Half Marathon course was 2 loops with each loop giving the runners a generous 486 feet of climbing per lap. Which translates to almost 1,000 feet of climbing for the Half Marathon.

Definitely a strong persons course.

We are so impressed by all the athletes who braved those conditions to come out and race the first edition of the Lake Norman Half Marathon Wildman & 5K.
